Skate: Any species in the order Rajiformes. Although the English names for some skates refer to them as rays, the term ‘ray’ should refer to stingrays (Myliobatiformes) and electric rays (Torpediniformes)

Spotted skate Raja montagui has numerous black spots that do not extend to the extreme margins of the disc, though the colouration is quite variable. It is one of the more abundant species on inshore grounds.
