Sea temperature and salinity trends
The coastal temperature network and ferry route programme; Long-term temperature and salinity observations
This report updates that of Jones and Jeffs (1991) and Norris (2001). The latter author presented monthly mean sea surface temperature data in tabular format for stations around the English and Welsh coast, up to 2001. This publication, available both as a hard copy and annually updated on this website (www.cefas.co.uk/data/seatempandsal), summarises the temperature condition of coastal surface waters around the coast of England and Wales and the salinity and temperature condition across the Southern Bight of the North Sea. It describes the climatology as time series trends up to 2004 and puts it in the context of the last three decades.
Where appropriate, data in this report are presented as anomalies in order to show how the values compare to the average or 'normal' conditions. Observations for each station are presented in the context of the previous three decades. For each station the base period is defined as, from 1971 to 2000.
