The virus of Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN) of salmonids could be isolated and identified near Hannover in September 1974 for the first time in the Federal Republic of Germany. The isolation was possible in RTG-2 and FHM cell cultures. The isolate was identified by neutralization and indirect immunofluorescence with specific antisera. By electron microscopy particles of 70 nm in size could be seen which corresponded with descriptions of IPN virus in literature. Consequences after detection of IPN in the Federal Republic of Germany are discussed.
