In this report we describe the co-isolation of two viruses IPNV and IHNV, from rainbow trout fingerlings in a Spanish farm. Differential diagnosis was performed by seroneutralization using polyclonal immunosera. Several other diagnostic probes such as immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase, demonstrated the identity of both viruses. After elimination of IPNV, the presence of specific sequences in the supernatant of infected EPC cultures of the nucleoprotein of IHN were demonstrated by amplificaton with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the primers described by McAllister (1991). It is the first report of the IHNV in Spain.
