In October 1988, two deep-frozen eels (Anguilla anguilla L.), imported from Poland to the Federal Republic of Germany, were sent to the Department of Fisheries NRW for examination. The eels, which had a length of 50 cm and 60 cm, respectively, had been caught in the Baltic Sea near the estuary of the River Weichsel. Post-mortem examination revealed severe inflammation and necrotisation of skin, fins and muscular tissue, haemorrhages in trunk musculature and liver, as well as enteritis. Yersinia ruckeri was isolated in pure culture from liver, spleen and kidney on Tryptic Soy Agar at 18°C.
