Viral haemorrhagic septicaemia (VHS) with varying mortality was observed in 12 new brackishwater rainbow trout farms in the Åland Islands in May-June 2002. VHS was not observed elsewhere in Finland in 2002. The first cases of VHS were observed in 2000 in the Åand Islands and in Pyhtää, south-eastern coast of the Gulf of Finland. VHS has never been detected on the mainland of Finland.
