An outbreak of peripheral neuropathy and retinopathy, a disease associated with gill-associated virus (GAV) infection, was detected in Penaeus monodon on a monitored pond in New South Wales.

In the Northern territory, GAV was detected in a research station in healthy Penaeus monodon broodstock prawns in quarantine.

In Queensland, GAV can be present as a chronic infection without clinical disease and is considered one of the viruses associated with mid-crop mortality syndrome (MCMS) and MCMS-like syndromes in farmed prawns. The lack of a clear case definition and an apparent role for mixed virus infections makes reporting of conclusive GAV-specific epizootics in Queensland impossible.
