During Autumn 2002, bonamiosis was detected in a sample from a wild bed in Achill Sound, Co. Mayo (west coast of Ireland). No deaths were reported. The European Commission and the OIE were informed and this area lost the approved zone status (2002/378/EC). An epidemiological investigation was carried out as required under Directive 95/70/EC. The level of surveillance was increased in the nearest bay, namely Black Sod Bay. Bonamiosis was detected at the very low prevalence of 0.2%. This area has also lost the approved zone status (2003/729/EC).
