The isolation of Yersinia ruckeri serovar 1 from the gut of 2 out of 148 clinically healthy carps (Cyprinus carpio) captured in the hydrographic system of Valdivia (southern Chile) is reported. The significance of this finding and the role played by the carps in the transmission of enteric redmouth disease is discussed.
