SPRING VIRAEMIA OF CARP IN DENMARK (in imported koi carp)

Report date : 4 October 2002.

Nature of diagnosis : laboratory.

Date of initial detection of animal health incident : 30 August 2002.

Estimated date of first infection : 22 August 2002.

Outbreaks:
Location: Southern Jutland (Sønderjyllands) county
No. of outbreaks: 1
Description of affected population: koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) imported for resale to release in garden ponds.
Diagnosis :
A. Laboratory where diagnosis was made: Danish Veterinary Institute (Århus).
B. Diagnostic tests used: cultivation on EPC(1) cells followed by virus neutralisation.
C. Causal agent: spring viraemia of carp virus.

Epidemiology :
A. Source of agent / origin of infection : imported animals.
B. Other epidemiological details: the imported koi carp showed increased mortality and were therefore examined at the Danish Veterinary Institute. The koi carp were infected with koi carp herpesvirus, which was the main cause of the increased mortality.

Control measures :
- The infected establishment has been placed under quarantine.
- All fish on the establishment which have had contact with the koi carp infected with spring viraemia of carp virus have been killed and destroyed.
- The establishment was disinfected after depopulation.
