Summary from the online OIE Diagnostic Manual

The causal agent of furunculosis is Aeromonas salmonicida and it is one of the oldest known and described fish pathogens. The condition is characterised by the presence of lesions that resemble furuncles and may occur in acute, sub-acute or chronic forms. The acute form of furunculosis appears as a general septicaemia, in conjunction with darkening in colour, lack of appetite, lethargy and haemorrhages at the base of the fins. Apart from typical furunculosis in salmonids, A. salmonicida can cause an "atypical" form in cyprinid fish, which is often characterised by a non-pigmented isolate. The production of a brown, water-soluble pigment on plate culture is a major diagnostic feature of A. salmonicida , although its quantity and time to appear may vary. Control of furunculosis includes adequate husbandry practices, the use of antimicrobial agent and, more recently, vaccination in certain circumstances.
