Cefas women race for life

Photo: Race for Life participantsFleet-of-foot women from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) laboratory in Lowestoft made their mark this weekend in the women-only 5km Race of Life, which took place at the Norwich Showground. Cefas’ Nicola Hawkes, of Cefas’ recruitment team, came second in a field of several thousand winners on Sunday 9 May.

The race in Norwich was split over two days – Saturday and Sunday, 8–9 May – and involved some 7,000 women in total. The organisers were thrilled with the turnout and the support they received. Locally, they hope to raise as much as £435,000 for Cancer Research UK this year.

Nicola Hawkes said: ‘It was brilliant to see so many fired-up women giving their all on the day. It was hard work but it was all worthwhile. My sisters from Cefas did really well and we managed to raise over £500, which is great. Coming second on the day was the icing on the cake, and a real surprise.’

Colleagues from the Science Area and Management Support Unit (SAMSU) and other sections of the Cefas Lowestoft lab ably supported Nicola. Friends and relatives of the Cefas employees also put on their trainers and ran the course. Sponsorship is still being sought.
