Cefas hosts Science Masterclass
50 A level science students were invited to spend the day at Cefas Lowestoft laboratory on Thursday 12th February to explore some of our research areas and discuss topical science issues.
The students, from 5 high schools in North Suffolk, listened to presentations from our scientists on fish pheromones, fish age determination, algal blooms and fish behaviour. The students were then briefed on two current marine science problems with a sustainable development theme - coastal erosion and depleted fish stocks - before being split into small groups to discuss and devise some possible solutions. After each student group had presented their conclusions back to the masterclass, Cefas scientists commended the students' thorough consideration of the issues, and explained the current research approaches.
The masterclass was also used to launch an exciting new partnership programme for second year A level students, offering them the opportunity of working alongside a Cefas scientist on an extended work placement to complement their study programme.
Feedback from the students was very positive. One student from Bungay High School said "the presentations were very informative and extremely enjoyable". Nearly all of the students agreed that the masterclass had increased their interest in marine science issues and made them think more seriously about pursuing a career in science.
Cefas hopes to run a similar masterclass again next year.
