CBE Honour for Cefas Scientist
One of our most senior scientists, Dr Bob Dickson, was awarded a CBE in the New Years Honours List for services to oceanographic and climate science. Dr Dickson has a long and distinguished career in ocean science. He has worked at Cefas since 1964, during which time he has pioneered research into the study of ocean processes in the Arctic region.
Dr Dickson is the Chairman of a major international study designed to investigate and understand the role of the Northern Seas in Climate. Since its beginnings in 2000, the 'Arctic-subarctic Ocean Flux Study (ASOF)' has rapidly grown to the point where it is now the largest ocean-observing system in the Northern Hemisphere. Although Dr Dickson is semi-retired, he is also a Member of the UK National Committee for the International Polar Year (IPY). From March 2007 the IPY will investigate the large and important changes that are taking place in the physical environment of both Poles, and seek to identify their effects on a truly global scale".
Dr Dickson is deservedly thrilled with his CBE “It’s a great thrill that someone noticed the work. But its equally good to know that the problem I've been working on (the role of the northern seas in global change) is itself recognised as important.”
