New Publication: Radioactivity in Food and the Environment
Cefas produces a survey report of radioactivity in food and the environment each year. The latest report was sponsored by the Environment Agency, the Environment and Heritage Service (Northern Ireland), the Food Standards Agency and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. It covers the whole of the UK and surrounding seas.
They include data on concentrations of radionuclides in food, sediments, soils, air, water and plants, and radiation dose rates over various substrates.
Risks to the public are calculated near sources of discharge to the environment such as nuclear power stations. These are compared with national and international standards for protection of the public.
