Ecosystem applications

Combined fisheries echogram and multibeam bathymetry from the Central North Sea (Doggerbank).Acoustic tools can provide essential information on benthic, demersal and pelagic ecosystems. These spin-off acoustic applications are used in fisheries management and integrated ecosystem studies. Integrating data from different tools and disciplines can often result in an improved understanding of the marine ecosystem.

We have correlated acoustic survey data with biological and physical data to identify habitat preferences and to assess species’ abundance. These established correlations help us to map large areas using cost effective acoustic techniques.

Benefits of integrated techniques

  • Improved methodology
  • Cost effective and efficient
  • Improve our understanding of ecosystems
  • Improve seabed management and conservation.
