Tier 3 - Toxicity Reduction

• Aim: Reduce toxicity
• Invoked if Tier 2 outcome indicates unacceptable risk
• Two approaches – can be used singly or in combination
• Toxicity Identification and Evaluation (TIE) – to identify the chemicals causing the effect
• Toxicity Source Evaluation (Toxicity tracking) – to identify the waste stream/process causing the toxicity.
• Most sensitive species from Tier 2 used in toxicity tests

Toxicity based fractionation studies offered by Cefas provide diagnostic evidence to enable environmental managers to identify and target problem contaminants. Remediation strategies for reducing toxicity can then be applied.
