Environmental Monitoring Equipment

Photo: Cefas profiler being deployed over a seagrass bedWe provide self-contained and automated systems for high frequency, multi-parameter data collection in the marine environment.

Our equipment is designed for reliability and cost-effectiveness, operating in harsh conditions over long timescales. Features include:

  • High frequency sampling in time and space
  • Physical, chemical and biological measurements
  • Smart technology enables conditional water sampling
  • In-situ calibrations
  • Real-time global monitoring via telemetry
  • Custom configured systems

Smart Moorings

  • Moored observational platforms to measure temporal variability in physical, chemical and biological parameters
  • In-situ automated sensors and plankton sampler
  • Featuring SmartBuoy technology an integrated sensor and 'intelligent' sampler system
  • Independent h-situ automated calibration of sensors
  • in-situ nutrient analyser
  • Real-time global 2-way telemetry
  • Sensor configuration to meet user needs

Intelligent towed bodies

  • U-Tow is a ship-towed integrated system to measure spatial variability in physical, chemical and biological parameters
  • Complete plankton sampling (micro - to zooplankton)
  • Shared technology with SmartBuoy.

Bottom landers

  • Minipods are flexible seabed landers for measuring near seabed processes
  • Highly flexible application-specific build and deployment options
  • Microloggers are designed for automated in-situ measurements of sediment processes
  • Simultaneous measurement of physical, chemical and biological parameters
  • In-situ calibration of optical and acoustic sensors

Data application

Our autonomous monitoring systems can be combined with real-time data transmission and interpretation tools, such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

These provide up-to-date reports on water quality and environmental conditions. This data can be made available via the internet to maximise data sharing and aid management decision making.

Our systems are used for a range of applications, such as:

  • water quality assessment
  • forecasting
  • eutrophication studies
  • understanding coastal processes
  • contaminant behaviour
  • coastal protection
