Salmon and freshwater
Our dedicated Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries team provide a range of advisory services based on scientific research expertise.
Cefas experience is used nationally and internationally in the assessment and management of mixed stock salmon fisheries and freshwater fisheries. Advice is used for the development of management programmes and for informing policy decisions.
Services include planning and running field research studies, laboratory investigations, and modelling techniques. We assist with:

- investigations into salmonid behaviour
- fish tracking techniques to understand salmonid movements
- evaluating the impacts of human activities on migratory fish
- investigating interactions between fish and the freshwater environment
- susceptibility of fish to aquatic pollutants
- sub-lethal effects of water contaminants
- impacts of habitat degradation
- investigating the environmental biology and impacts of non-native fishes
- impacts of piscivorous birds on fisheries
- use of fish refuges
