Andaman Sea survey
Project description
The purpose of this project was to carry out sampling survey work in the Andaman Sea, which formed part of an environmental impact assessment prior to oil and gas exploitation.
Cefas is experienced at undertaking environmental impact assessments to provide advice on potentially harmful effects of man-made and natural activities and events. We specialise in complete aquatic environmental impact assessments, from survey design and implementation, through to data interpretation.
Our assessments are highly specialised and take into account location characteristics, production processes, and potential impact on sediments, water quality and biological interactions.
Services provided by Cefas
Tailoring the work to the needs of the client, Cefas carried out two baseline sampling surveys using a local research ship. Benthos and contaminants were sampled in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, involving the collection of biological, sediment and water samples. These samples were analysed for hydrocarbons, PAHs, trace metals and nutrients.
The results were used to determine the effects of existing contaminants on biological populations and the marine environment.
Tasks undertaken:
- Baseline surveys
- Assessment of the impact of physical disturbances caused by new oil and gas exploitation.
- Advice given on strategies for further monitoring and management.
