English Beam Trawl Survey

Title: English Beam Trawl Survey
IARN: AF001-0000028
Identifier:
Description: To provide year-class strength indices of sole and plaice, and record all fish and crustacean catch. This dataset comprises records of fish length and catch by fishing station. There are 87 fishing station positions, of which at least 80 are fished each year. All fish taken in the trawl are identified to species, measured, weighed and counted.  The catch is subsampled where necessary. At all stations a photographic record of the substrate is taken using a forward-pointing 35mm camera attached to the beam trawl (1990-1994). A sample of the sediment is taken by the Day Grab to calibrate the Roxanne system, in operation at all stations since 1992. Flatfish are otolithed by length category, from the entire area of 107D. Fishing station positions are distributed within each ICES rectangle, but the emphasis is on the shallow water areas.
