Our primary purpose is to provide high-quality science in support of UK government departments to:
- conserve and enhance the aquatic environment
- promote rational management of our natural resources
- protect the public from aquatic contaminants
Our scientific research is conducted under three themes:
Within this section of the website you will find examples of research projects that we are currently involved in, or have previously completed. Many of these projects are either funded by the UK Government or European Commission

As well as conducting our own research we also work in collaboration with other organisations in the UK, Europe, and worldwide. We have established strong links with other scientific institutions and universities. Many of our scientists chair and participate in numerous Working Groups.
