David is a senior scientific advisor within the Food Safety Group at the Cefas Weymouth laboratory, UK. David also holds the position of Director of the European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for bacterial and viral contamination of bivalve molluscs. The EURL is funded by the European Commission and based at the Weymouth laboratory.
David has more than 30 years’ experience in human health microbiology including disease diagnosis and monitoring, virological research, algal biotoxin monitoring, statutory related programmes and reference laboratory activities.
David has a research interest in improving public health controls for bivalve molluscs, particularly regarding contamination with human viruses such as norovirus. David authored the first demonstration of detection of norovirus in naturally contaminated shellfish using PCR in 1995. This breakthrough paved the way for more than a decade of development culminating in the publication of the first international standard ISO method for detection of viruses in foods (ISO 15216) and the consideration of food controls for norovirus at the international level. David is a well-recognised expert, participating by invitation in a number of national and international risk assessments. As the Director of the EURL David directly advises the European Commission on issues related to microbiological safety of bivalve mollusc. David has an extensive publication list including several highly cited papers.
