Recruited at Cefas (1987), following a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Wales (Cardiff), to study the chemical behaviour/transport of radionuclides in the marine environment. Over the years, work has evolved to include a variety of radioecological (R&D) and radiological issues (non-R&D), and a number of customers, e.g. Defra (MAFF), FSA, EA, SEPA, DECC, NIEA, Aldermaston, GE Healthcare etc., the EU, collaborations within other Cefas teams/disciplines, UK Institutions/Universities and EU Institutions. Author of over 70 peer review publications and numerous contract reports.
Accountable (since 1990s) for the Cefas Radioanalytical Service, responsible for radioanalytical delivery, method development and quality control (ISO 17025) and then for the portfolio of all the Cefas radiological R&D projects (chemical, biological, modelling, etc.) and non-R&D projects (radiological assessments and surveillance, radioanalysis, habits surveys and radiological emergency response). A principle author (since 2004) of the annual report series "Radioactivity in Food and the Environment” (RIFE) on behalf of EA, FSA, FSS, NIEA, NRW and SEPA.
Professional Qualifications and Bodies include: Board Member of the International Conference series ERA: An International Symposium on Nuclear & Environmental Radiochemical Analysis - RSC (since 1994); Editorial Board Member of "Journal of Radiological Protection" (since 2002); Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Physics (2004); Chartered Radiation Protection Professional (since 2009); Vice-Chair of RSC, OSPAR (since 2012).
