David has over 20 years' research and commercial experience in temperate and tropical marine environments. Following a three year position as manager of the marine fisheries research portfolio at the Ministry for Agriculture Fisheries and Food (now Defra), he joined Cefas in 2000 and is currently Science Leader for Fisheries and Environment Division, a role that encompasses strategic planning, science delivery, customer liaison and quality assurance. He is an active researcher and publisher; his research interests encompass fish behaviour and ecology, as relevant to evolution and significance of migration, spatial dynamics and foraging strategy, and in relation to environmental variability and management of fisheries/ human impacts. He was the leader of the EU CODYSSEY and EU EELIAD projects. His science role is underpinned by a strong background in project management and delivery of complex interdisciplinary and multi-partner/ country projects for UK Government and the EU. David is a former associate editor of the Journal of Marine Biology and is currently a trustee of the Buckland Foundation.
In 2017, David became the Director of the newly established Cefas Strategy Directorate.
