Dr Ioanna Katsiadaki (Principal Investigator (physiology, endocrinology, toxicology))
Ioanna’s research interests are wide, including fish physiology, endocrinology and behaviour; (eco)-toxicology and risk assessment; biomarker development; protein and lipid biochemistry; fish welfare). However, she focuses much of her work around the three-spined stickleback as a model organism for all above research disciplines. She developed an assay for the only known to date androgen induced protein, the stickleback spiggin, which was subsequently used for both chemical screening and environmental monitoring in several countries. As a direct result of her work, an OECD test guideline (TG234; the Fish Sexual Development Test) and an OECD Guidance document (the Androgenised Female Stickleback Screen, AFSS, No 148) became part of an international test guideline programme for the detection of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) in 2011. TG234 using 3-spined stickleback resulted in a 25% reduction of fish used per test so her work will feature in the NC3Rs 2013 research review (view as an e-book). Ioanna is a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) and a member of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Peer Review College (since 2009). She has been acting as the UK representative in the fish expert group for the OECD validation Management Group for Ecotoxicology (VMG-Eco) since 2005 and is the leader of one of the four core projects within the UK-Japan government cooperation on endocrine disrupting substances. Ioanna has been invited to present her work in numerous international conferences including the Gordon Research conference on Environmental Endocrine Disruptors, Les Diablerets, Switzerland, 2010. She has extensive experience in the management of National and European research contrac
