During September-October 1991, following some severe mortalities in mullets( Mugil cephalus , Chelon labrosus , Liza sp. )in the Venice lagoon, chemical, physical and biological investigations have been carried out. Pasteurella piscicida has been isolated from fish collected in 5 out of 12 sampling areas. The bacterium has been identified from fish with clear clinical and pathological signs as well as from asymptomatic fish. Environmental conditions seem to play an important part in the observed outbreaks.
