During a severe mortality occurred in a population of breeding cat fish( Ictalurus melas )a viral agent has been isolated. Affected fish showed cutaneous haemorrhagic petechiae and ulcers and a severe gill anemia. During the last stage of the disease the fish maintained a vertical position in the water. Gross pathological signs were punctate haemorrhages in the kidney, liver, spleen, perivisceral fat and skeletal muscles. The viral isolate, identified as 562 reference strain, contains DNA, actively multiplies in heterologous cell cultures of EPC, BF-2, CHSE-214, OFC, GHSBF and PG between 10 degree and 25 degree C and has an Irido-like morphology.
