Unexplained mortalities of Russian sturgeon (Acipenser guldenstadi) have occurred on a farm in Northern Europe for the last 5 years. Routine microbiological examinations of these fishes failed to identify parasites or bacteria as the etiological agents. Light and electron microscopy revealed an iridovirus with properties identical to those of white sturgeon iridovirus. This is the first report of a virus identified in sturgeon other than white sturgeon (A. transmontanus) and is the first report of a virus identified in sturgeon outside of the USA.
