A total of 2280 wild migrating broodfish caught from the Bothnian Bay and the estuaries of nine rivers were examined for bacterial kidney disease (BKD) and viral fish diseases in 1989, 1990 and 1991. All the samples examined were negative. IPN was first diagnosed in Finland in 1984 and BKD in 1988(National Veterinary Institute, annual reports 1984 and 1988 ). Both diseases were found in farmed fish in the Bothnian Sea and the Archipelago Sea regions.
