Viral erythrocytic necrosis (VEN) is reported in the red blood cells of Mugil cephalus, Blennius pholis and Platichthys flesus from coastal waters of Portugal. Infected specimens showed erythrocytic inclusion-like bodies and, or, nuclear degeneration. External symptoms of the disease were not observed. M. cephalus and P. flesus have not previously been identified as hosts for VEN. This is the first time the disease is reported in Portugal and the second reported occurrence in continental Europe.
