This paper reports the first case of bacterial kidney disease (BKD) in whitefish. Since 1989, the disease has been diagnosed most recently in rainbow trout, three times in farmed Baltic salmon and once in char fingerlings. R. salmoninarum has even once been isolated from organs of a wild sea trout brood fish in 1990. According to the literature the disease has been identified in 13 species of salmonids (Austin & Austin 1987) but no earlier report of whitefish exists.
