Bacterial kidney disease was established in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, and Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., following the intraperitoneal injection of viable Renibacterium salmoninarum. The disease was characterised by a chronic systemic infection and signs were similar to those recorded from natural outbreaks. Colonization and multiplication of the bacterium occurred on serosal surfaces and within connective tissue elements. R. salmoninarum was able to infect the endothelial cells of the renal tubules.
