In December, 1977, a laboratory-reared population of 51 adult (22 months old, 40-90 g) Penaeus monodon began to die of what was initially diagnosed as a disease due to a protozoan, but with a secondary bacterial phase. This is the second reported virus disease in the penaeid shrimp, and the first reported from P. monodon . Both diseases are due to baculoviruses, but the latter disease may be easily distinguished from the disease caused by Baculovirus penaei in the brown (P. aztecus)and pink (P. duorarum)shrimp by the shape of the intranuclear inclusion bodies.
