Perkinsus olseni occurs in wild populations of New Zealand cockles, Austrovenus stutchburyi (family Veneridae), and two other bivalve species, Macomona liliana (family Tellinidae) and Barbatia novae-zelandiae (family Arcidae). These mollusc species occur widely around the coast of New Zealand.
