Information received by OIE on 11 December 2001 from Dr Josef Holejsovsky, Chief Veterinary Officer, State Veterinary Administration, Prague:

Report date: 10 December 2001.

Nature of diagnosis : laboratory.

Date of initial detection of animal health incident: 22 November 2001.

Outbreaks: Location : Kruzberk, Opava district (in the north-eastern part of the country). No. of outbreaks : 1

Description of affected population: one pond with breeding fish (500) and two with fattening fish.

Total number of animals in the outbreak: species pis; susceptible 81,500; cases 1; deaths 0; destroyed 0; slaughtered in progress

Diagnosis: this positive case was found within the framework of the disease monitoring programme.
A. Laboratory where diagnosis was made: Veterinary Research Institute, Brno.
B. Diagnostic tests used : cell culture, ELISA(1).

Epidemiology:
A. Source of agent / origin of infection
: unknown, investigations are under way.
B. Mode of spread : under investigation.

Control measures:
- all fish are being slaughtered and ponds emptied, cleansed and disinfected;
- quarantine and movement control inside the country;
- testing;
- zoning.
