SPRING VIRAEMIA OF CARP IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
( Date of previous outbreak of spring viraemia of carp in the United States of America reported to the OIE: April 2002).

Emergency report

Information received on 10 June 2004 from Dr Peter Fernandez, Associate Administrator, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Washington, DC:

Date of the report:
10 June 2004.

Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.

Estimated date of primary infection: 30 March 2004.

Outbreaks: Location: State of Washington, Snohomish County (in the north-western part of the country). No. of outbreaks: 1 'backyard' pond
Total number of animals in the outbreak: species: pis; susceptible: 111*; cases: deaths: 5**; destroyed: 6**; slaughtered:
* 11 koi carp and approximately 100 goldfish
** koi carp

Diagnosis: in the month of April, 5 of the 11 koi carp died. The remaining 6 koi carp were submitted for diagnostic testing and spring viraemia of carp was diagnosed.
A. Laboratories where diagnosis was made: Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL), National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL).
B. Diagnostic tests used: cell culture; polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Epidemiology:
- The 11 koi carp and approximately 100 goldfish were purchased from a pet store for use in a backyard pond in March and April of 2004. Trace-ins and trace-outs from the pet store will be conducted.
- There is no connection between the pond and natural waters.

Control measures: stamping out (the gold fish remain in the pond and are scheduled to be depopulated and the facility cleaned and disinfected).
