Summary from the online OIE Diagnostic Manual

Eel Rhabdovirus Disease is generally assumed to be a collection of strains from "healthy" eels (A. rostrata or A. anguilla) from North America or Europe. However, eel rhabdovirus involvement may occur in cases of haemorrhagic conditions and mortality of elvers at temperatures of 20°C or higher. Two strains of the virus have been designated EVA and EVEX, although serological studies have indicated that they are very similar, if not identical. They are also serologically different from the rhabdoviruses of carp, perch, pike and salmonids.(N.B. Another viral disease of eels exists but this is designated eel virus European (EVE). However, this is a birnavirus that is serologically closely related to the Ab strain of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). There is evidence that EVE is involved in outbreaks of eel kidney disease or branchionephritis.)
