Cefas makes an important contribution to securing healthy, sustainable marine and freshwater environments so that current and future generations can prosper.We are the UK’s largest and most diverse applied aquatic science centre with over 100 years of experience. Our teams include internationally recognised experts in aquatic virology, microbiology, parasitology, ecotoxicology, molecular biology and histopathology.
We work with a range of commercial organisations throughout the world, including companies providing aquatic products, fish breeding services, veterinary pharmaceuticals and disinfectants.
Our Aquatic Production Evaluation Group (APEG) offers a range of development and assessment services for all major types of aquatic products. We have contributed to the successful development of a broad range of safe, effective products. Our broad experience also allows us to contribute to regulatory compliance of aquatic products.
APEG uses state-of-the-art aquarium facilities and associated laboratories to undertake a broad range of environmental and product evaluation studies including a range of aquatic bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal challenge models.

Our aquarium facility is fully compliant with both Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). The facility is supported by an aquatic production unit where high quality disease-free test fish are produced.
