As the UK's largest and most diverse applied marine science centre, Cefas helps to shape and implement policy both domestically and internationally. Our work is focused on securing healthy and sustainable marine and freshwater environments so that current and future generations can prosper.
We have a global reach, with collaborative relationships that span the EU, UK government, non-governmental organisations, research centres and industry.
Our customers include fisheries, governments, and energy producers. We work collaboratively with them to deliver effective results by drawing on our extensive scientific and technical capacity and proven ability to deliver high quality scientific analyses and management advice. This includes helping customers respond proactively to the implementation of legislation, including the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), helping them to reduce any negative impacts.
Our advisory services are built on a foundation of an evidence based approach, and we continually work to develop and improve our scientific methods.
Our work takes us from freshwater to the open ocean and includes both wild and farmed fish. Our influence and leadership spans a wide spectrum of issues, including:
- Climate change impacts and adaptation
- Marine planning and environmental licensing
- Sustainable fisheries management
- Marine biodiversity and habitats
- Fish and shellfish health and hygiene
- Emergency response
We support this by collecting, managing and interpreting environmental, biodiversity and fisheries data. Our expertise also extends to innovative work in data management, stock assessment, analyses of spatial data, as well as investigations into the effects of both environmental and human influences on ecosystems.
