International Government Capability Development
At Cefas we are experts in marine environmental policy, monitoring and assessment. We have over 100 years’ experience acting as close advisors to the UK government and international bodies. We are recognised as a leading international provider of services related to the development and implementation of national and regional marine environmental management programmes. Our multi-disciplinary teams have a broad range of specialist skills, including in depth knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements for the UK and EU, as well as around the world. These teams are highly experienced in translating high-level national and international environmental policies into specific, detailed operational objectives, and developing associated bespoke monitoring programmes to meet these requirements.
Our reports on the impact of human activities on marine environments are supported by evidence from multi-disciplinary surveys and monitoring programmes. As trusted advisors to governments, these reports then influence the implementation and development of environmental policy.
Drawing on many years’ experience, we can work with our customers to define detailed operational management objectives, and then prepare and implement data collection programmes and assessment processes. Subsequently, we can then help our customers develop and apply decision support tools to guide effective and efficient management interventions.
In recent years, Cefas has played a major role in supporting the UK government and international organisations to implement the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Cefas successfully led international expert working groups to identify targets, indicators and assessment criteria, as well as advising on the implementation of programmes to fulfil policy objectives.
Cefas is currently supporting the Kuwaiti government in developing their national marine environmental strategy. This includes establishing environmental management indicators to track progress against policy objectives and designing and overseeing the development of a comprehensive national marine environmental monitoring programme.
Cefas is also supporting further co-operation between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom via a three-year agreement to collaborate in the delivery of marine and fisheries initiatives. These include measures to combat illegal fishing, support conservation and ensure high quality and safe seafood through a partnership with the Agency for Marine and Fisheries Research (MMAF).
