Inspection and Advice
The Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) is the official service for the control of serious diseases of aquatic animals in England and Wales and are a regulatory body based in the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), Barrack road, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 8UB

The FHI is split into the three following internal teams:
1. The Inspections, Surveillance and Disease Control Team includes the FHI’s field team whose primary role is to inspect and regulate Aquaculture Production Businesses (APB’s) in England & Wales. This is achieved by inspecting aquatic animals on APB’s to ensure they are free of listed diseases, ensuring compliance with regulations governing the industry, promoting best practice, implementing biosecurity standards, supporting safe trade, investigating and controlling serious disease outbreaks, and statutory enforcement actions. They also, implement Non-Native/Invasive Species Legislation, working on behalf of other government agencies and participating in Cefas research and work overseas.

2. The Aquatic Animal Trade Team provide statutory advice to ensure compliance with regulations governing the import and export of live aquatic animals. Working collaboratively with industry stakeholders, Official Veterinarians, border control personnel, and government bodies to facilitate safe trade in live aquatic animals and to ensure statutory obligations are fulfilled and sanitary controls for live aquatic animals are implemented at our borders.

3. The Aquaculture and Freshwater Fisheries Licencing and Data Team are responsible for underpinning evidence and metrics of aquaculture development and statutory controls within England and Wales. The team provides essential support for aquaculture and freshwater fisheries development and regulation through statutory controls, licensing, and regulation. They ensure new and existing aquaculture businesses are registered and authorised in compliance with legislation, while maintaining accurate and up-to-date records and databases. The team also facilitates disease investigation and regulatory enforcement, including the issuance and administration of statutory controls and permits.
