About Us

The Cefas Fisheries International Centre of Excellence was founded:

  • To advance, apply and share Cefas technical expertise in fisheries science and advice to further fisheries sustainability.
  • To showcase and strengthen Cefas end-to-end and quality-assured support for successful fisheries management.
  • To provide a focus for ongoing technical support and guidance to meet the needs of partner institutions and countries.

The Cefas Fisheries International Centre of Excellence brings together experts in all aspects of fishery science from across Cefas. The Cefas laboratory and its predecessors have been active in fisheries science since 1902, when a laboratory was first established in Lowestoft on behalf of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. The Lowestoft laboratory has been responsible for ground-breaking developments in the understanding of fish population dynamics and fishing effects, and engaged internationally in fisheries research since its inception. Today, our approaches to fisheries science and advice benefit from wider Cefas expertise in ecosystem science, climate change, marine habitats and conservation and seafood science.
