Welcome to Cefas’ International Centre of Excellence for Seafood Safety.
This website brings together all of our work that supports the safe production and placing on the market of seafoods, with emphasis on bivalve molluscan shellfish such as oysters, mussels, clams and scallops. This site is particularly relevant to National Competent Authorities with responsibility for shellfish monitoring, official laboratories and academics.
Through this site you can contact our people, learn about our science, join our proficiency testing programmes or sign up for training and workshops. It also contains technical information, method protocols and guidance that may help in the development of new or running of existing shellfish sanitation programmes.
Cefas is designated as the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) Reference Laboratory for Bivalve Shellfish Sanitation and in this this role we work very closely with both FAO and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to support the development of sustainable bivalve shellfish production to improve global food security. Cefas is also designated by the UK’s Food Standards Agency as the National Reference Laboratory for Foodborne Viruses and Bacteriological Contamination of Bivalve Molluscs. You can find out more about our work in the UK and internationally with others through ‘our designations’
