International (ICES) and national (UK) fish stock and shellfish stock data from 2021 assessment year

Description

The dataset collected includes assessment output relating to the years from 1905 to 2021 inclusive for annual estimates of the following variables for each stock: the annual recruitment estimate; the stock size (spawning stock biomass); landings (tonnes of fish brought to shore); catches (tonnes of fish caught at sea); fishing pressure (a fishing mortality rate); the target fishing mortality that will achieve maximum sustainable yield in the long term (Fmsy); upper and lower range estimates for Fmsy consistent with multi-annual plans and ICES advice; a threshold for spawning stock biomass (MSYB trigger), below which fishing mortality should be reduced below Fmsy, following the ICES advice rule, to avoid reduced reproductive capacity; a lower limit threshold for spawning stock biomass below which there is a high risk of reduced reproductive capacity (Blim). The stock assessment data for fish and shellfish stocks of UK interest is used to assess indicators of reproductive capacity (based on spawning stock biomass) and fishing pressure (based on fishing mortality).

The applicable location for these data differ by stock, but apply to UK stock areas in the Celtic Sea / North Sea / wider North East Atlantic / Arctic region.

These stock assessment data are updated from a version released in 2021. Stock assessment data from ICES form the core of this dataset, originating from:

ICES Stock Assessment Database, Extraction date: 20220216 of STOCK(S)/ASSESSMENT 2021. ICES, Copenhagen. ICES Datasets: http://standardgraphs.ices.dk/stockList.aspx

ICES data are combined with additional Cefas & Marine Scotland shellfish data to generate a larger fish and shellfish stock assessment data file (1905-2021) containing stock summary information. Newly available records replace those in the old data product where they can be superseded. The R code for performing the update, whilst currently private, is found at https://github.com/JoeRibeiro/D3_indicator_update/tree/main/update_data_product

The data sets for internationally assessed stocks were collected from the ICES stock assessments advice sheets of each stock and year. The data sources can be found at the ICES website (http://standardgraphs.ices.dk/stockList.aspx) when selecting the relevant stock and year.

Rows of data collected from the UK national shellfish stocks data originate from the following specific datasets and associated reports:

Data stating FMSY ranges originate from the ICES advice sheets. These ranges are not routinely provided under the ICES stock list download, and so have been copied from the advice sheet pdf files by a data analyst. These are enumerated in one file which is then merged with each record by an R program.
