Stock enhancement (Workshop Report)
R.C.A. Bannister
The stock enhancement theme covered a broad spectrum of species summarizing the state-of-the-art of extensive mariculture and its application to the ecology and management of exploited species, including salmon, sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), mussels and oysters, pectinids, lobster (Homarus gammarus ), and cod (Gadus morhua). There appears to be considerable scope for improving the definition of the time and place for releasing stock into the wild, and in evaluating which life history stage is best for ecological and economic reasons. The time-space problem arises particularly in connection with the problem of establishing self-recruiting populations, and physical models are an important tool which can be used to examine this.
