Optimal fitting of a model to observations of sediment concentration in the Irish Sea

J.N. Aldridge

Observations of current speed, wave activity and optical backscatter intensity obtained in the Irish Sea from an autonomous near-bed monitoring device are presented. The difficulty of interpreting many sections of data are noted. A simple model of the processes of local sediment resuspension, bed consolidation, together with advection of material from outside is introduced. It is shown how a least squares fitting technique can be applied to assimilate observational data into the model. The feasibility of using the model and the least squares fitting technique as a tool for interpreting observations and obtaining parameter estimates is demonstrated.
