Improving estimates of salmon pre-fishery abundance and national conservation limits in the NASCO-NEAC area

The paper reviews progress made by the ICES Working Group on North Atlantic Salmon and the EU "Salmodel" Concerted Action Programme to improve the estimation of pre-fishery abundance and the national conservation limits for the NASCO NEAC Area. The current model employs catch data and estimates of non-reporting rates and exploitation rates to estimate the numbers of fish returning to homewaters. Efforts are being made to improve these estimates in various ways, including by splitting the national data sets into regions. Alternative methods for estimating the numbers of returns are also being developed incorporating both counter and catch data. Current assumptions about natural mortality are being reviewed to determine whether alternative values should be used in the model.
