Dr. Murray made her point at a CEDA Dredging Days conference - and she's now proven to be something of a prophet! There were only two schemes in place that used fine dredged material at the time, but with that material receiving increasing attention from both regulators and conservationists, there're now 16. This success story has contributed significantly to an increasing willingness to identify novel methods of intertidal placement of fine dredged material - driven by both regulators' and conservation bodies' assurances that the retention of that material within estuarine systems is one of the more appropriate applications for beneficial use. And in addition to creating important intertidal habitats, beneficial use of dredged material is also being adopted as a sustainable approach to flood defence.
