Publication Abstract

Branchial release of free cortisol and melatonin by rainbow trout

T. Ellis, J.D. James, and A.P. Scott

Individual rainbow trout were held in a specially constructed tank, enabling water to be collected separately from the anterior and posterior ends of the fish. The immunoreactive cortisol and melatonin concentrations in the anterior end were far greater than in the posterior end, and HPLC fractionation indicated these to be free cortisol and melatonin. Free cortisol and melatonin are therefore released into the water via the gills.
